<title>Syringe pump delivers full stroke for large syringes</title>
<link>http://www.measurementdevices.com/index.php?name=News&amp;file=article&amp;sid=2152</link>
<description>Click for larger image
Thame, UK -- The new Legato 270 Syringe Pump available from Dorton Analytical, has an optimised user configurable syringe mechanism designed to uniquely deliver a full volume in infuse and withdraw modes whether using small or large syringes.

This reconfigurable mechanism allows the user to change the syringe clamping mechanism to hold from 0.5 ul up to 140 ml syringes.

Two removable pins adjust the syringe mechanism to allow full stoke when using larger syringes.

The Legato 270 features a continuous push and pull pump.

When used with check valves, the unit will draw fluid from a reservoir while the opposite side is dispensing fluid and after the user selected volume is dispensed, the pump will automatically switch through the check valves and refill the empty syringes while dispensing from the other side.

<title>Fiber Optic Sensor Interrogator for PXI Express</title>
<link>http://www.measurementdevices.com/index.php?name=News&amp;file=article&amp;sid=2150</link>
<description>New Module Overcomes Noise Susceptibility, Transmission Distance and Other Limitations of Conventional Sensors

AUSTIN TX, USA -- /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- National Instruments has announced the NI PXIe-4844 optical sensor interrogator, a two-slot 3U PXI Express module for fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors.

FBG sensors operate by reflecting a wavelength of light that corresponds to changes in physical phenomena such as strain and temperature. Unlike conventional electrical sensors, FBG sensors are nonconductive, electrically passive and immune to electromagnetic interference, making them a safe and reliable alternative in environments subject to noise, corrosion or extreme weather.

The transmission medium is standard optical fiber instead of copper wire, making it possible to take measurements over long distances of up to 10 km.

Engineers and scientists can use FBG sensors for the most common measurement types, including strain, temperature and pressure, and several sensors can be daisy chained along a single optical fiber to greatly reduce the size, weight and complexity of the measurement system.

<title>Automation of Industrial Processes</title>
<link>http://www.measurementdevices.com/index.php?name=News&amp;file=article&amp;sid=2149</link>
<description>The answer to the crisis for large energy companies

Bucuresti, Romania -- Both goods producers and big energy companies as well as associated services (like transportation, infrastructure) are looking for alternative solutions to productivity growth and cost reduction. A possible answer is the implementation or extension of industrial automation processes.

&quot; In this difficult times, Romanian companies are interested in operational costs cut downs and looking for the best solutions that can meet the automation needs in industrial activities,&quot; says Ion Andronache, CEO at Syscom 18, a company that delivers integrated systems in industrial automation.

Although the industrial automation market has almost downsized by half comparing to the period before the crisis (2007 – 2008), as well as the number of projects in oil, gas, metallurgical and fossil fuel powered plants, large companies kept on investing in equipment and services that essentially contributed to industrial process efficiency.

By an effective use of resources, company administrators want to reduce production costs. The production firms choose to integrate the data provided by their equipment into their data systems.

&quot; The monitoring electronic systems we provide for various indicators (temperature, pressure, level, flow, etc.) allow data transmission to the management or the project managers in real time. Thus, the engineers have a more precise control over the production activity and can redistribute or reconfigure the equipments, by this simplifying the information cycle and reducing costs,&quot; explains Andronache.

<link>http://www.measurementdevices.com/index.php?name=News&amp;file=article&amp;sid=2140</link>
<description>Natural gas dehydration facility adds SIS to prevent dangerous overpressures

At a facility for dehydrating large volumes of raw natural gas from wells, engineers designed a Safety Instrumented System (SIS) of SIL-2 to help protect low-pressure pipe and process equipment against overpressures.

Components of the SIS include a PLC logic solver, ABB 2600T pressure transmitters, and pneumatically actuated ball valves.

Removing water

Located near a field of producing wells in western USA, the facility has safety critical points at each of several manifolds that share the total flow of raw gas being processed. One such manifold, as indicated Figure 1, has gas inputs coming through pipes from five wells in one area of the well field. Gas from the wells ranges in pressure up to 3,000 psi in insulated, underground pipe specified for these high pressures.

<title>Rapid and Accurate Analysis of Selenium in Shampoo</title>
<link>http://www.measurementdevices.com/index.php?name=News&amp;file=article&amp;sid=2132</link>
<description>Thermo Fisher Scientific Enables Rapid and Accurate Analysis of Selenium in
Shampoo Ensuring Compliance with EU Cosmetic Products Legislation

CAMBRIDGE, UK -- Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. has released a new method guide for the analysis of selenium in shampoo. The method, which aligns with the European Union commission directive 97/73/EEC stipulating the methods of analysis necessary for checking composition of cosmetic products, features the ThermoScientific iCE 3000 Series atomic absorption spectrometers.

These spectrometers include deuterium background correction as standard and offer a fast and accurate solution for the analysis of selenium in shampoo. The iCE 3000's wizard-driven SOLAAR software also provides simple spectrometer optimization and method development tools.

The method is detailed in an application note, App-Note-43050, entitled &quot; The Determination of Selenium in Shampoo by Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrometry&quot;.

Pityriasis capitis, more commonly known as dandruff, and seborrheic dermatitis, an inflammatory disease of the skin, are treated with selenium disulphide, which is contained in lotions and shampoos. After rinsing, selenium disulphide residues may remain on the scalp and can enter the body through broken or damaged skin.

<title>LIBS Technology Spots Fake Antiques</title>
<link>http://www.measurementdevices.com/index.php?name=News&amp;file=article&amp;sid=2129</link>
<description>Ocean Optics’ Spectroscopy brings science to ceramics evaluation at Beijing Antique City

Dunedin FL, USA -– Technology from Ocean Optics is being used in China’s Beijing Antique City to separate authentic ceramic antiques from fakes. Nationally recognized antiques appraiser Guan Haisen employs an Ocean Optics Laser-induced Breakdown Spectrometer system (LIBS), with QE65000 spectrometer, to help him identify artificially aged ceramics and artifacts.

The LIBS system uses a laser to burn away a microscopic area (invisible to the naked eye) of the object under test, causing a plasma to form. The plasma is then analyzed for the key elements of interest, such as chemicals used to simulate the process of aging. The entire test takes less than 30 seconds.

Currently, the ceramics examination industry in China relies heavily on the appraiser’s knowledge and experience. LIBS analysis brings a level of technical accuracy to antique identification.

<description>Cryptic variable tags now can be replaced with more appropriate ones

Everett WA, USA -- Maple Systems has just expanded their PLC support to more fully integrate their HMIs with controllers from Allen Bradley and Siemens. This important expansion in capabilities comes with their newest release of EZware.

Among the enhancements of this upgrade is the ability to utilize tags with Allen-Bradley Controllers in such a way that they can be named with descriptive text the programmer chooses rather than having tag names based on PLC memory addresses.

This is important on two levels. First, it means that your Maple HMI can work with an Allen-Bradley controller without changing the coding of the controller itself. That allows you to place a Maple HMI into an established Allen-Bradley process without disrupting the existing controller program.
