General : Happy World Metrology Day!!

General Measurements in daily life
2013 PosterWorldwide -- May 20 was World Metrology Day, commemorating the anniversary of the signing of the Metre Convention in 1875. This treaty provides the basis for a coherent measurement system worldwide.

The theme chosen for 2013 is Measurements in daily life. In the course of a typical day it is surprising how often measurements come into play, whether (among many possible examples) checking the time, purchasing food or produce, filling up a vehicle with fuel, or undergoing a blood pressure check.

These, and countless other activities in daily life, require measurements of one sort or another. Yet accurate measurements are taken for granted nowadays.

Not surprisingly, most people are unaware that in the background there is a worldwide community specializing in metrology, the science of measurements, making sure it all works. Everybody depends on this community doing its job, and doing it well.

Applications : Determination of organic & inorganic carbon levels

apps Exeter Analytical's Optimised Direct Method

CE440 Elemental AnalyserCoventry, UK -- Exeter Analytical reports that a growing number of laboratories are using its Model 440 CHN elemental analyser to accurately determine percentage organic and inorganic carbon levels at different parts of the carbon cycle.

The carbon cycle is the biochemical process by which carbon is exchanged among the biosphere, pedoshere, geosphere, hydrosphere and atmosphere of the Earth. Along with the nitrogen cycle and the water cycle, the carbon cycle comprises a sequence of events that are key to making the Earth capable of sustaining life.

Exeter Analytical has published an optimised technique for direct determination of total carbon, organic and inorganic carbon in marine sediments.

The Model 440 CHN Elemental Analyser is able to provide accurate results expressed in micrograms of total Carbon and Nitrogen detected. Then after sample acidification the organic carbon content can be determined.

New Products : Broadband Amplifier Line from Teseq Offers Low Distortion, Reliability

newproducts New CBA 400M-260 operates from 10 kHz to 400 MHz with a rated power of 260 watts
CBA 400M-260Edison NJ, USA – Teseq has expanded its broadband amplifier line to include a Class A linear and low distortion model that operates from 10 kHz to 400 MHz with a rated power level of 260 watts.

Used in commercial or in-house EMC test laboratories, the CBA 400M-260 is ideal for automotive, military and aerospace BCI (bulk current injections) applications that require testing at higher levels.

Like other Teseq broadband amplifiers in its class, the CBA 400M-260 uses gallium arsenide (GaAs) integrated circuit technology to provide better compression characteristics and increased efficiency compared to silicon-based power amplifiers. This amplifier reduces overall power consumption.

New Products : New Range of Optical Triggers

newproducts Battery-Powered OT3 Optical Trigger
OT-series triggerTring, UK & Specialised Imaging Ltd. (Tring, UK) has been assigned the worldwide rights by SFW (El Cajon, CA, USA) to manufacture and market its new range of Optical Triggers. The highly reliable OT-series trigger has been re-engineered by Specialised Imaging to reduce its size and improve robustness.

The new OT3 optical trigger is battery driven to make the system portable and isolate its operation from interference from ground loops, noise spiking or brownout. The sensor is a blue enhanced array of twelve diodes that has a spectral response from 300-1300 nm.

A 700 nm cut-off filter has been incorporated to reduce the range from 300-700 nm so that it is much less likely to saturate from high IR sources, such as clouds.

A further benefit of the OT3 is that it can be used as an IR muzzle flash detector as well as a sky-screen detector. Due to the unique design of the OT3, the sky screen reference can be artificial (e.g. white board or a LED light array) thus removing any operational dependence on good weather.

Applications : Monitoring NH3 slip in de-NOx processes based on Selective Catalytic Reduction

apps Kaegiswil, Switzerland -- In power generation, NOx can be reduced by 99% with SCR where NH3 is injected into the exhaust gas. This process is extensively used in power plants and has found its way into emission control of truck and car diesel engines.

In all applications ammonia slip can occur, which either needs monitoring during operation or for system design and testing.

The Axetris laser gas analyzer is a perfect tool for OEM integrators because it offers a contact-less low ppm-level measurement of NH3 in a heated sample gas cell (190 °C) and its extractive set-up allows for simple 0- and span-gas measurements.
