Traditionally the jewellery industry has relied upon optical eyepieces and standard desktop optical microscopes to inspect diamonds and emeralds for inclusions, carbon deposits and surface damage. However with growing market demand for authentication, particularly at the luxury end of the market, the need for a powerful, yet affordable digital microscope that can inspect, measure and electronically document gemstones has become apparent.

Tokyo, Japan -- Anritsu Corporation has announced that it has developed the AS5B125EM50M 1.55-μm SLD module to provide fiber output powers of 25 mW over a wide wavelength range of 60 nm for use in fiber sensors and optical measurement.
The AS5B125EM50M is a 1.55-μm band, low-coherence light source for use in a wide variety of fiber sensor and optical measurement fields, such as building and bridge health monitoring, security management of important structures and more.
Since 1.55-μm light sources in these fields must support multipoint monitoring, they require wide bandwidths and high outputs. However, 1.55-μm band ASE light sources have a narrow wavelength band (30 to 40 nm), while conventional SLDs with a wide wavelength band have low outputs of just a few mW.

The ALTAIR Li uses an IR camera which provides thermal images of the area under investigation at fast frame rate. Using proprietary software these thermal images are converted into full field stress images, without any contact with the material surface.
The full field stress images are produced in real time by using the thermoelastic effect which states there is a linear relationship between the temperature changes induced by loading and the stress at the material surface.
When used to measure heat dissipation on a structure under dynamic loading (D-MODE) the ALTAIR Li system can be used to rapidly determine the materials fatigue limit and provide information on the damage mechanism involved.
